              Message from the Principal

              Picture
On behalf of Fort Richmond Collegiate, I am honoured and pleased to host the 8th International Student Science Fair (ISSF 2012) in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, April 30th – May 4, 2012. This event has continued to attract the best and the brightest students of science from around the world and we are eagerly looking forward to extending our warm Manitoba welcome to aspiring scientists from around the world.

As science educators we strive to provide a learning environment for our students that encourages inquiry learning. What better way to enhance this experience for our students than to provide them with an opportunity to share their work with an international community of their peers. The goals of the ISSF are:

              · To effectively communicate scientific knowledge and concepts to an international audience
              · To think critically about how effective leadership in science can provide solutions to complex social issues, and
              · To make cross-cultural connections with gifted science students, teachers and principals

To this end, the strong traditions of the ISSF will continue in Winnipeg in May 2012.

The theme for ISSF 2012 is Living Sustainably – Role of Science and Technology. Within this theme, the fair will provide opportunities for participants to explore relevant topics of study in six different related strands:

              · Clean Water
              · Climate Change
              · Sustainable Energy
              · Feeding the World

              · Health and Genomics
              · Science for Society

Students will have the opportunity to work with world renowned researchers from Manitoba Universities, Government and Non-governmental organizations to explore these strands. The future sustainability of our planet lies with informed and responsible stewardship. The next generation of scientists will be critical in determining the success of this effort.

It is our hope that the 8th ISSF will offer the opportunity for all participants to make connections across the world and to use this network to further advance the body of scientific knowledge that will be need to ensure the sustainability of our world.

It is with great anticipation that we welcome the world to ISSF 2012. We look forward to welcoming you to Winnipeg in May.

              Mr. John R. Karras
              Principal, Fort Richmond Collegiate
